What to do with Rotten Food: buy and fill a greenhouse Composter

October 3 creator demonstration + Update 5 transfer fix; reviewed October 22

The short answer

Put Rotten Food into a Composter placed in a greenhouse. DeLindsay’s October 3 video shows Piotr Turner’s Docks hardware shop selling it, the placed machine’s transfer window and a Fertilizer Bonus in a growing module’s speed breakdown.

This is a use for spoiled leftovers, not a way to turn them back into fresh restaurant ingredients. The demonstration predates Update 5; its displayed price, capacity and bonus are observations from that save, not a universal current quotation.

Give leftovers a separate destination.

  1. Buy and place

  2. Use composter

Transfer Rotten Food within remaining space.

  3. Inspect module speed

Find and place the machine

  1. Keep the Rotten Food separate from fresh stock you still need.
  2. Visit Piotr Turner’s hardware shop in the Docks and search for Composter. The video shows this vendor around 2:02.
  3. Read the current item, price and Farming requirement before buying.
  4. Place the machine in the intended greenhouse, keeping enough room for your modules and storage.
  5. Interact with Use composter; the video opens its inventory window around 2:17.

Transfer leftovers and check the actual result

Select Rotten Food from personal inventory and move a quantity that fits into the machine. Update 5 specifically fixes Max and + in transfer windows, including the Composter, to respect remaining capacity. Read the machine’s current amount after the transfer.

The creator then checks a growing module’s speed details and shows a Fertilizer Bonus of 15% around 2:43. That confirms what this demonstration displays; it does not establish stacking several composters, a per-item duration, a universal yield increase or a current profit formula.

Use the original demonstration if you need the visual vendor-to-machine route. We have not reproduced it in gameplay ourselves.

Rotten Food returns to inventory after travelling

A comment on the video reports the transferred stack returning after fast travel. That is an older player report. The Update 5 capacity-button fix is narrower and does not prove that this return-to-inventory symptom is repaired.

  1. Record the personal and machine counts immediately after the transfer.
  2. Reopen the machine before leaving to check the stored amount.
  3. If you travel and the stack returns, compare both locations again and record the build.
  4. Keep the outcome unresolved if the counts do not persist; do not repeatedly buy machines to test an unproven stacking theory.

Composting does not solve unlimited production

October 17–22 greenhouse discussions request automatic Rotten Food transfer to composters; a request is not an implemented feature. Do not assume a Manager or auto-harvester empties spoiled stock into the machine for you.

If automation is overwhelming storage, reduce or pause surplus production and inspect storage. More growing speed can increase an existing surplus. For avoiding fresh-food waste in the first place, inspect refrigeration and real menu demand.
