Unlock recipes: venue rewards, NPCs and grey inspiration recipes

Released-game guides · sources checked October 10, 2026

The short answer

Progress venue levels and follow recipe-giving conversations or quests. Those are the current paths described by Neoseeker’s October 10 recipe guide. You begin with Chicken Noodle Soup; other recipes can be rewards from particular venues or people.

For a grey recipe tree that will not open, the author’s current reply says inspiration points are earned but their spending feature is not implemented. Treat that as a dated guide observation, not a reason to keep clicking or buy extra kitchen equipment.

Nivalis Nights / Recipe learning

Learn it before supplying it.

  1. Venue rewards

Each venue has its own recipe progression.

  2. People and quests

    Finish the named recipe conversation.

  3. Grey inspiration tree

Current author correction says spending is unimplemented.

Different reasons a recipe is unavailable
What you seeUseful next stepWhat it does not imply
A recipe you have not learnedLook for its venue-level reward or named NPC/quest.Buying its ingredients does not necessarily teach it.
A learnt recipe with a red requirement iconExpand it for missing ingredients or equipment. The icon is not the same problem as an unlearned recipe.
A grey inspiration recipe/tree that does not respondUse known reward paths; read the current inspiration caveat below.A visible point total does not prove spending is enabled.
A recipe learnt but not on this menuOpen the intended venue’s menu and consider its slots, supplies and equipment.Knowing a dish does not mean every venue already serves it.

Separating these cases avoids an expensive false solution. A Drink Machine prepares known drinks; it is not evidence that a grey recipe tree will become clickable. Conversely, unlocking a recipe does not put the required stock into the restaurant.

This is a practical starting list, not an exhaustive collection. Other venues have different reward sequences. Do not keep levelling Ramen Noir in the expectation that it grants every dish from another restaurant’s progression.

Why the inspiration-point advice changed

The recipe page was edited October 10. A player then asked why the grey recipes and tree could not be selected. Jaska’s reply corrected the earlier explanation: points accumulate, but the associated learning functionality has not been implemented.

Older search snippets can still describe inspiration spending as an available unlock method. A snippet may lag behind the body and replies. On the version covered here, use the currently documented reward/conversation routes instead of treating the nonresponsive tree as a confirmed save corruption.

If a later update announces this feature, follow that update’s own controls and requirements. The correction does not establish that every unlearned recipe is permanently unavailable, nor that all versions will behave identically.

Turn a learnt recipe into a working menu item

  1. Open the recipe and record each ingredient and processing requirement.
  2. Check whether the intended venue has a Food Processor or Drink Machine plus the ingredient-processing appliances.
  3. Choose a menu slot, then deposit the required food rather than leaving it in personal inventory.
  4. Review supplier availability; caught or grown ingredients may need manual transport.
  5. Recheck the shopping list, target and daily budget after adding the dish.
  6. Observe a completed order. The unlock is successful before service; actual production is a separate check.

For substitutions that reduce a supply problem, use Customize Recipe. For deciding whether the item belongs on this venue’s menu, compare your own orders and costs rather than a universal best-dish ranking.
