Get the Putter boat: Salt Pete, Ava and the first water trip

Released-game guides · sources checked October 10, 2026

The short answer

Talk to Salt Pete at the Docks and follow the Putter ownership/registration objectives. The guide identifies Ava as handling registration after the claim is established. Once available, board the Putter and follow the journal through taking the wheel and the first discovery by water.

A free shore-fishing rod and an owned boat are separate unlocks. The Putter expands where you can travel and cast; it is not required for the first Docks catch.

Follow the ownership chain before searching for a boat purchase

  1. Find Salt Pete at the Docks and start the boat-related conversation.
  2. Read the active ownership/registration objective and finish its dialogue.
  3. Complete Ava’s registration step when the quest presents it.
  4. Board the available Putter, take the wheel and follow the first water-travel objective.
  5. After discovering the requested new area, return to Pete for the next conversation.

The source describes this as a story/registration route, not a universal vessel price list. If the next action is not available, inspect the preceding conversation and current objective before spending money on a supposed alternative boat.

Returning to Pete after the opening water trip starts the treasure clues in the reported Seafaring sequence. You can use the boat for ordinary fishing without assuming every yellow scanner pulse is already an active quest target.

Prepare the first trip around three limits

CheckReasonUseful action
FuelSearching and returning use the same travel resource.Read the actual gauge and plan the return route.
Rod and purposeBoat ownership does not place a rod in your hands.Equip a rod and identify a fish, area or active treasure objective.
Inventory and destinationA catch can be useful only if you can keep or store it.Reserve space and decide where food will go.
Time of dayCurfew changes land-travel decisions.Identify a safe end-of-day route before adding another detour.

The developer FAQ confirms that the boat is steerable while the taxi is not a player-driven vehicle. Use the boat’s own displayed controls; this guide does not invent turning keys, a fixed fuel burn rate or a guaranteed range for one fill.

Use the scanner for the task you actually have

For fish, combine the Database’s area/conditions with the detector’s nearby activity. For submerged treasure, look for the relevant unusual-object signal and confirm the recovered item’s name.

The detector guide explains why a yellow pulse is not the same as a known fish species. Seafaring Treasures describes the Head, Body and Logic Unit stages and their return conversations.

On a longer route, check fuel before committing to the next district or search loop. The Calypso treasure guide identifies a fuel station by the island’s boat dock, but that landmark does not justify promising unlimited travel elsewhere or identical refuelling access at every stop.

If the boat or next objective seems unavailable

Which stage has actually failed?
SymptomCheck first
No usable boat after talking to PeteThe current claim/registration objective and Ava’s conversation.
On board but not progressingThe wheel interaction and the named first water-travel objective.
First trip done, treasure not startedReturn to Pete and complete the clue/message sequence.
A district destination is lockedThe map/quest requirement, not a new boat purchase.
Offshore catch is not the quest itemThe active treasure stage and correct signal/location.

Success is a registered, usable Putter and the first travel objective progressing. If a ready interaction still fails, record the boat’s location, journal stage and build. Do not treat a detector mismatch or a missing return dialogue as proof you need to reacquire the boat.
