Recipes & equipment
Customize recipes and substitute ingredients you can supply
Open a learnt recipe and use Customize Recipe only for a slot that allows a same-family substitution. Neoseeker reports that fish dishes can use another fish, and gives Pizza Napoli’s cheese and herb slots as another example. This is not permission to replace every ingredient with anything in inventory.
After a change, inspect the resulting requirements, the venue menu and its storage. A substitute you caught or grew still has to reach the restaurant before the dish can be served.

What a permitted substitution looks like
| Recipe or slot | Allowed family described by the guide | Practical check |
|---|---|---|
| Fish ingredient in a fish dish | Another fish | Confirm the recipe’s allowed slot and use a catch that is actually in venue stock. |
| Pizza Napoli: Mozzarella slot | Another cheese | Read the edited recipe before assuming equipment or stock remained identical. |
| Pizza Napoli: Basil slot | Another herb | Make sure the replacement is an allowed herb, not simply a green-looking item. |
| Any slot without a replacement option | Use its listed requirement | Do not infer a substitution from a different recipe’s flexibility. |
These examples are attributed to the current recipe guide. They are useful when a dish’s original ingredient is hard to purchase but an allowed alternative is available. Check the actual recipe interface for the slot you intend to change; the examples do not establish an unrestricted custom-dish builder.
Change one ingredient and inspect the result
- Start with a learnt recipe and record its original ingredient list.
- Open Customize Recipe and identify the slot offering replacements.
- Select an allowed item that you can keep supplied, rather than one held in a single personal-inventory stack.
- Read the edited ingredient and processor requirements before leaving the recipe.
- Open the intended venue’s menu and inspect that same dish’s expanded requirements.
- Transfer the replacement stock into appropriate venue storage; keep freshness and available room in mind.
- Observe one order being produced and served before changing several other dishes.
The check on the venue menu matters because this guide does not assume that an edit propagates identically to every restaurant or saved menu configuration. Confirm each affected venue rather than expecting a hidden global rule.
Compare the whole supply path, not just the ingredient name
A good substitution has a route from acquisition to service. For a purchased item, check vendor access and availability. For farm output, trace the harvest through personal inventory into the venue. For caught fish, consider freshness and refrigerated capacity before staying out for another trip.
| Record | Before editing | After editing |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredient | Original item and venue count | Replacement and available venue count |
| Acquisition | Vendor, harvest or fishing route | A route you can repeat during normal play |
| Equipment | Expanded recipe requirements | Any changed or still-missing requirement |
| Purchases | Current target, budget and list | Updated list plus manual supply needs |
| Service | Was the dish blocked or producing? | Did a real order finish after the change? |
This is an editorial comparison sheet, not a gameplay experiment or profit calculator. It helps you explain whether the change solved a shortage without attributing an unrelated staffing or price change to the substitution.
If the custom dish still cannot be made
Expand its red icon first. A missing appliance is not solved by buying the replacement ingredient. If the item is in personal inventory, transfer it; if it is already at the venue, inspect quantity, storage destination and the dish’s current requirements.
In Update 4, the transfer window identifies ingredients used by the active menu. Ingredients from the original recipe may now be leftovers, but keep any stock needed by another dish before clearing it. Reconcile the shopping list with the actual menu rather than assuming a past requirement still applies.
Success means the intended substitution appears in the recipe, its requirements are available at the venue and an order completes. To assess sales afterward, use the menu and pricing comparison; an allowed substitution is not a guaranteed improvement in profit or customer preference.
