Fishing & boats
Start fishing: get Boardwalk Addy’s free rod and make the first catch
Speak to Boardwalk Addy at the Docks waterfront and take his spare fishing rod. Equip it from inventory, cast from nearby shore and return to him after a successful catch. You do not need to own the Putter before this first fishing lesson.
The guide uses Addy; another source spells the name Ady. Match the waterfront NPC and quest rather than treating the spelling difference as a second rod seller.
Nivalis Nights / First fishing trip

Get the rod before spending restaurant cash
- Reach the Docks and find Boardwalk Addy near the waterfront.
- Ask about fishing and accept the spare rod.
- Inspect inventory to confirm you actually received it.
- Equip the rod, then move to shore where you can cast into the water.
- Complete a catch and return to Addy for the marked conversation.
Whisper’s October 8 guide describes this as a free start. Salt Pete supplies another old rod during the maritime story, but that later reward is not a reason to delay ordinary fishing. Buying a replacement before trying the provided rod also does not resolve a wrong location or missing quest conversation.
Cast, identify the result and finish the lesson
Aim into accessible water, wait for a bite and use the game’s reel/catch prompt. This page does not prescribe fixed key bindings for every control scheme; use the displayed controls after equipping the rod.
| Observation | What to do next |
|---|---|
| The rod is still just an inventory item | Equip it before trying to cast. |
| No cast reaches the water | Check your shore position, aim and displayed action prompt. |
| A fish is caught | Check inventory and the journal, then return to Addy. |
| An unfamiliar object is caught | Read the item; salvage exists and is not automatically the requested quest object. |
| The catch succeeds but the lesson remains active | Finish the return conversation and inspect the actual objective. |
The first task is a catch and return, not completing every species or maximizing a scanner. Stay near the Docks while learning the sequence; offshore search adds boat and fuel decisions that are unnecessary for this lesson.
Learn from the catch instead of repeating one spot blindly
After catching a new species, inspect the Fish Database information it opens. District, time and weather can matter for later targets. A rod upgrade cannot guarantee a species whose conditions do not match your location.
The guide lists Stickleback at the Docks, Mountain Town and Sewers as a useful early example. That does not mean every cast in those districts produces it, or that every fish shares those locations.
For a deliberate next catch, use the detector and database guide. If a target is offshore, follow the Putter registration task. Shore fishing remains useful even after the boat becomes available.
Decide what the first fish is for
| Goal | Check before using or selling |
|---|---|
| Finish the fishing lesson | Whether the active objective or return conversation needs the catch. |
| Supply a restaurant | A learnt recipe that accepts the fish and free suitable venue storage. |
| Discover another species | The database entry and missing collection target, not just more of the same fish. |
| Sell surplus | No unfinished quest or active dish needs that quantity. |
The developer FAQ supports fishing as a source of restaurant ingredients or items to sell. To use it in a meal, transfer it to the venue; carrying a fish near the kitchen is not the same as stocking a recipe. Allowed fish substitutions can help, but inspect the actual recipe slot.
Watch freshness and the clock before extending the outing. Success for this page is the rod received/equipped, a catch made and Addy’s lesson advanced. The next trip can then have a specific purpose rather than an expensive equipment purchase made on guesswork.
