Unhappy staff: check wages, preferred shifts and skill increases

Released-game guides + Update #4 changes · sources checked October 10, 2026

The short answer

Inspect the affected employee’s pay and scheduled shift against their current skills and preferred hours. Neoseeker reports that skills can improve through work while wages do not automatically rise; both shorter and longer shifts than the preferred length can lower mood.

Use the visible mood as feedback. We do not prescribe a universal happy wage or a fixed countdown until an employee quits.

Record the employee’s present conditions

  1. Open the correct venue’s Staff tab and select the unhappy employee.
  2. Record the current wage, skills, mood and scheduled start/end.
  3. Compare the shift length with the employee’s preferred hours.
  4. Check recent skill-level messages and any missed-pay warning.
  5. Keep enough actual cash for wages alongside manager purchases; a restocking budget is not a documented payroll guarantee.

Change the condition you can explain

If the schedule differs from the preferred duration, try aligning it while preserving necessary service coverage. If training has increased the worker’s skills, review pay instead of assuming the original offer remains appropriate.

Change one condition and observe the mood and work on a comparable shift. The exact happy wage depends on the worker and circumstances. A raise that cannot be paid is not a stable solution.

Keep mood separate from an unresolved work stoppage

Update 4 corrects a cleaner happiness bug so level and happiness properly improve movement and cleaning speed; it also fixes chef skill influence on action speed. Older observations may therefore describe a different build.

Success is improved visible mood with wages being paid and the intended job progressing. If an employee remains inactive despite a valid shift, role and requirements, use the work-stoppage checks. Replacing a manager is not an established universal fix for another worker’s mood.
